Truck rate per mile calculator
Find your all-in operating cost per mile and a target rate from your truck’s real expenses. Add monthly loaded miles to see how empty miles affect the minimum rate you need to charge per loaded mile.
Monthly miles and fuel
Use total truck miles for fuel, driver pay, variable costs, and fixed-cost allocation. Loaded miles are optional and help estimate a billed rate that also covers empty miles.
Operating costs per mile
Leave an optional cost at zero only if it does not apply. Include each expense once.
Inputs stay in this browser and are not sent to UFN. Download a CSV if you want to keep the estimate.
How this truck rate per mile estimate works
Fuel cost per mile is diesel price per gallon divided by truck MPG. Fixed cost per mile is monthly fixed expenses divided by total monthly truck miles. The calculator adds fuel, maintenance and tires, other variable costs, fixed costs, and driver pay to find your all-in cost per truck mile. Your target profit per mile is added to find a target rate.
When you enter monthly loaded miles, the estimate divides required monthly revenue by loaded miles. This helps account for empty miles that still consume fuel, time, and equipment capacity.
Your results depend on the costs and mileage you enter. This tool does not provide market pricing, tax advice, or a guaranteed minimum contract rate.
Rate per mile calculator FAQ
How do I calculate my truck cost per mile?
Divide monthly fixed costs by total monthly truck miles. Then add fuel cost per mile (diesel price per gallon divided by MPG), maintenance and tire cost per mile, other variable cost per mile, and driver pay per mile.
How do I find a target rate per mile?
Add your desired profit per total truck mile to your all-in cost per total truck mile. If you enter loaded miles as well, the calculator divides required monthly revenue by those loaded miles to estimate the minimum rate per loaded mile needed to cover empty-mile costs too.
What should I include in other variable costs?
Include costs that change with miles or loads and that you have not entered elsewhere, such as tolls, scales, factoring charges, and trip fees. Avoid counting the same expense twice.
Does this calculator use current market freight rates?
No. It estimates your cost and target rate from the values you enter. It does not include live lane prices, broker offers, taxes, or unlisted expenses.
Are my cost and rate inputs saved or sent to UFN?
No. The calculator runs in your browser. Your inputs are not uploaded to a UFN account or server. Download a CSV if you want to keep a copy.
